How can I help my child to succeed on the READING FCAT TEST?

You can start by making sure that your child is reading for pleasure while he/she is at home. Take them to your local library or to stores such as Barnes & Noble and let your child pick out books or magazines that THEY are interested in. Reading should be fun! They are to have in their book bags something to read for PLEASURE at ALL times. We read silently in class quite often and it is very important that your child has something FUN to read in their book bag. Your child has a copy of the FCAT TEST TERMS in their reading folder. Please help your child memorize these terms! You can ask them the work and then have them tell you the definition. These terms have been proven to be a part of the questions on the FCAT Exam.

Does my child ever have any homework?

Yes! They are to read at home at LEAST 45 minutes each night. Please make sure that they are reading something that THEY enjoy. Let them select their reading materials. We want reading to be fun, so if they have a choice in the reading selection process they will be more likely to read, read, and read!

What will be taught once the FCAT Exam is finished?

We will be reading Tiger Wood’s book titled Start Something. We will be teaching and modeling various reading strategies while we are reading this phenomenal book. We will also be reading a book titled Life is Funny by E.R. Frank. This particular book is the winner of the Teen People Book Club NEXT Award as well as A Book Sense Top Ten Selection. We will also be learning study skills and critical thinking skills to prepare your child for the SAT Test.
